Details

Bournelyf is a special camp for youth with mental retardation and related disabilities.  It is a summer, educational/recreational day camp, promoting the development of each camper's potential through participation in an exciting variety of challenging outdoor activities. Specific objectives include:

  • development of self-confidence and a positive self-image through individual accomplishments,

  • improvement of social and verbal skills through group activities.

  • achievement of improved levels of physical fitness.

Through the Camp's outdoor programs, campers learn and grow in "reasonable risk" situations.

Bournelyf special camp is offered to youth with disabilities aged 8 to 21. While the program is geared to campers classified in the mild to moderate range of mental retardation, the program is adaptable for other learning disabilities. In recent years, youths with physical disabilities have also participated in the Camp programs.

The Camp is characterized by a well-trained staff dedicated to the physical, intellectual and social well being of each camper. Staff experience ranges from college training to years of work with special children. To provide ample personal attention to each, there will be a a minimum of 1 full time staff member to 4 campers. (With younger campers a 1 to 3 ratio is maintained.)

The Camp was founded in 1981 as a service project of the Church of the Loving Shepherd.
